Shilpa Punater is the founder and leader of design direction of AKASHA LLC. In 1995, Ms Punater graduated from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, , whereby she was one of seven selected from 3000 applicants to study and master Textile Design. Ms Punater’s career began in London, where she worked with various textile galleries in identifying antique textiles. This experience prompted and urged her to create an initial collection in 1998. The business was created in London, under the name of SHILPA LTD and was introduced to the by an invitation and the opportunity to be showcased at the New York International Gift Fair with the Crafts Council.
The initial introduction to the market sparked a collection of soft accessories for the home as well as bags, which sold very well. In the following years, a comprehensive collection was developed and the customer list expanded to include not only key London stores, but major accounts as well. In the year 2000, Ms Punater decided to relocate corporate headquarters to New York, NY in the .
The design concepts found in AKASHA stem from Shilpa’s passion for textiles and her fascination with the structure and shapes found within natural forms. Inspired by nature, her collections are designed to produce visual impact, to stimulate the mind and add character to a room, with accents of fabric manipulation, texture and stitch.
Color, texture, pattern and form are vital components amalgamated and arranged in many combinations. Shilpa’s background in textile and her ability to understand the changes in fashion underlies the success of her brand. Her work emits a unique sense of fun and function.
